New Additions to the Household!!

Above are the two toy poodle pups that we now have terrorizing our home. As you can see by the photos.... Mark seems to really like them. I myself was NOT pleased to have 2 puppies to clean up after and train. Yes... they are cute as all puppies are but..... as we found out real fast.... it is extremely hard to train two pups together. While working with one... the other is malling her sister like crazy. They will be 4 mths old tomorrow.

The darker one's name is Maggie Mae and the white/cream colored one is currently Star Angel. (We have changed her name from Paisley (the name her breeder gave her)... to angel (which she is NOT!)... to Star Angel because she is bright white... almost angelic looking. They are registered with the CKC (Which in my opinion means nothing since they do not use DNA tests to prove their pure bred status & parentage.) The Dog registries are only good for tracking lineage (pedigree)... their family tree for what that's worth as it is all done on an honor system. ;-o And we all know how honest people can be.

My last day of vacation...

Well...tomorrow is the last day of my mini-vacation. Being that the 4th of July fell on a Sunday... we got Monday off as a paid holiday so I took Tuesday & Wednesday (tomorrow) off to enjoy a really long weekend.
I had plans of doing some heavy duty cleaning of the bedrooms & one of the bathrooms however... I spent every day outside gardening and lawn mowing.... not inside cleaning ;-o

Sooooo perhaps tomorrow I shall dive in to the cleaning mode... and get at least one bedroom cleaned. Ohhh ... I am talking deep cleaning...wall washing.... dusting... hoeing out unused clothing, etc. We'll see what tomorrow brings. It is suppose to be yet another bright sunny day.... and in the mid 90's.

Today for lunch we had a family gathering at the Knotty Pine Diner in Wampsville, NY as my cousin Sandy is here in NY from Maryland... and my other cousin Sylvia is here from West Palm Beach, Florida.... so they brought their mom (Aunt Phyllis) and met all of us Keville's for lunch. Dad & his wife Diane, my brother Steve, his wife Shelley & her daughter Autumn, my sister Debbie & I all went. It was so nice to see everyone again.
The older I get... the more I feel the need to bond to my roots. Weird.

The bandit that prowls in the night....

Aaah Ha! We finally caught the night bandit that was stealing the cats food & water!! This young opossum kept me entertained for 30 minutes the other night as I laid on the floor with the patio door open... taking his picture. The flash never even bothered him. I talked to him as he gobbled and crunched every morsel of cat food. He occasionally turned to me as if to say.... "hey lady... clam up...I'm trying to enjoy my dinner!"
Of course the cat was quite curious as well. He watched his food get eaten by this odd looking creature of which he'd not had the pleasure of meeting before tonight.
Actually.... opossums are quite amazing animals. They are the only marsupial native to Northern America. They have 50-52 razor sharp teeth. They are only pregnant for 13-15 days then they carry their babies (12-13 of them) in the momma's pouch for a good 2-3 months. Then after that... the babies cling to mom's fur as she carries on about her business. The 'possums are fun to watch as they are very meticulous at grooming themselves. They normally wash their hands & face in the water bowl before eating... then again after they eat.
Their back feet have "human" looking hands...with a thumb on each hand (foot). They even have human looking fingernails.
Yeah..... from the back they are not so attractive. They look like giant rats with that think hairless tail. They are still amazing animals.

Well I went to Chittenango as planned. I dropped off a HUGE bag of items to the Salvation Army Store. I am proud to say that I won over temptation!! My "junk" collecting side was being sucked in to going in the store to see what goodies I could find... but I did not give in to temptation there.

I also went to Sorbello's Produce & Lawn Nursery as planned. OMG!!!!! Their new facility and services are phenomenal!!! I must have browsed for over an hour.... admiring all the cool .... unique flowers and such!! They have such a huge selection and I am amazed at how many really pretty and unusual flowers they have. There are so many that I'd never even heard of before!! Ahhhh and not to mention... the facility itself is so nice. Very well landscaped (inside and out). I'd love to work in that type of atmosphere.

Anyways... then I stopped at my Dad's house down the road from the produce stand. Dad, my sister Debbie & nephew Brad were all sitting outside enjoying the beautiful breeze.
We sat and chatted over the loud traffic zooming by. I don't think I could ever get use to living that close to the main highway. It is so loud and dangerous. I'll stick with country living!!

I certainly realize I am getting old as the days... just fly by. Here we are heading in to June already. It's the 1st of my 3 day Memorial Day Weekend and all I have planned is heading to Chittenango to drop off donations to the Salvation Army, Go to the grocery store to pick up some cook-out foods & to stop by my friend John Sorbello's Produce, Lawn & Garden Center to pick up some plants. Maybe a few veggie plants & a few perennials.
I have been working in my flower beds these past few days and realize they need some rejuvenation.
Weeks ago I purchased some fruit tree's/bushes from Stark Bro's & from Michigan Bulb Co. So they will have to be planted this weekend as well.
Let's see... I bought 2 blue berry bushes.... yum yum!! A Cherry Tree which actually grows edible cherries... 2 mulberry tree's..... oh... and about 10 different colored hydrangea bushes...and a butterfly bush.
I can't wait for the fruits to start growing... (in 2-4 yrs) :o( It's a LONG wait but...... they'll be so good when they do come.

Well.... it's off to Chittenango!! Bye!

Hello World!!

It has been a very long time since I last posted my thoughts. I really haven't had much to say I guess. (I still don't) ;-o
Here we are headed in to the year 2010.... it seems so science fiction like. The year 2010! Woe!
Interestingly enough, tonight (New Year's Eve) at 19:11 (7:11pm) GMT, we'll experience a "Blue Moon".
Then the next one will be in the year 2012 -August 31st at 13:56 (1:56pm GMT). I have read some interesting historic facts regarding this whole "Blue Moon" occurance.

Apparently there will not be another Blue moon on New Year's Eve for another 19 years. Disk Jockies on the radio this morning were saying that the term "Blue Moon" came from the fact that a 2nd full moon only occurs every 19 years on New Year's Eve however according to NASA's website, The term "Blue Moon" is given to the 2nd full moon in a calendar month. That a full moon only occurs every 29.5 days which means there will never be a ful moon in February.
They go on to say that the term Blue Moon ... aka Once in a blue moon, means a rare occurance however 2 full moons in a calendar month are not that rare at all. Apparently they occur every 2.5 years. Huh!! Who would have guessed?!

NASA also states that the term Blue Moon originated in 1883 when Krakatau (a small volcanic island in Indonesia) where the volcano erupted such a huge amount of volcanic dust, the moon actually had a blue color to it. (Which had nothing to do with the full moon). This volcanic dust - that caused the moon to appear blue was such a rare, unusual occurance... perhaps only a one time occurance... the phrase "One in a Blue Moon" came to light.

Apparently somewhere down the road of time, it got misinterpreted by reporters or something like that.

Why am I sharing this info? Well... I don't really know. It was on my mind when I started to type. If I of all people found it interesting... someone else out there may too!!

Well, It is finally a sunny day. We have had so much rain this year... I have not had to water my garden. My veggie plants are strong and healthy. They're sure to bring us some nice juicy vegetables.

Yesterday we sold 7 cords of wood. The man wants even more so today we will be out back in the forest, cutting up tree's and splitting it. Due to the crashing economy, more and more people are resorting to woodstoves for heating. I can't say that I blame them as we'd have a woodstove too if we had room for one. I'm all for not having to buy heating kerosene every winter.

I have been fiddling around with Facebook.... however I have yet to understand the concept of it. Why don't people just email one another as opposed to short notes posted on a wall for the world to see. Perhaps I am just getting prematurely old. ;-0

My son Jeremy is doing well since arriving home from Canon City, Colorado on April 28th. He had been gone for nearly 7 years. I thank God every day for returning him home to me. It feels like 600lbs has been lifted off my shoulders. I worried about him out there with no family to turn to. Plus of course I missed him. Amazingly enough, he landed a decent job by the 3rd week of being home. The pay isn't the best but they have excellent benefits and it is super close by.

He says that once he saves enough money, he'll be buying himself another vehicle so he can get around on his own.

I've been on clindamycin antibiotics for a nasty tooth root abscess that has been paining me for 7 days now. I believe the clindamycin is the cause to some very vivid... realistic dreams where I am trying to save Jeremy & Jennifer from harm... like last night I dreamt that Billie Fucillo the autodealer here in NY was a mobster and he was killing off kids because he hates little people. I begged him to kill me instead... to please allow my children to live. It was a horrid dream. This is like the 4th dream I have had this week... trying to save my 2 children. The weird thing is... Jennifer passed away back in 1991 from an inoperable brain stem tumor. I couldn't prevent her from that yet alone stop the tumor from killing her. Perhaps I carry a deep seeded guilt within for not being able to protect her from that. I don't know.

Well, I am needed outside now to help stack wood. Bye!

Life in General....

I'm in one of those moods today.... wondering what my purpose in life is or if I even have one. It's as if I live to work... to barely make ends meet... struggle from pay check to pay check. You know... live to work & work to live.

I can't help but worry about all those people without jobs and those in poverish nations. How will they ever survive this crashing economy?! I have a good job and it is a struggle. Who will help those in need? Most of us have nothing left to give. I actually have to fight back the tears of empathy and fear. Depression seems to fill my inner being as I am in no position to help anyone in need as I can barely keep my own head above water. What worries me most is... nobody seems to be worried about those less fortunate. The government seems to be taking care of only the big financial guru's, not us lower to middle class working people. They are making more loans available to us but more debt is the last thing any of us need. WE need the bailouts... not AIG, Wallstreet or the auto industry. The environment would be much better off with less vehicles polluting it.

Sorry for my negativity today. I am usually upbeat & bubbly but this economy really has me down. It hurts me to see friends and loved ones bottom out and I am unable to help them. It is my nurturing nature to want to help people in need. Perhaps too, I emotionally need to repay society for all the love and prayers sent to me and my family during our very trying time, during my daughter Jennifer's illness and untimely death. I don't really know what it is that makes me feel compassion towards others and the less fortunate, poverish people who are forgotten or ignored. I just know how stressful it feels when I don't have enough money to make a bill payment on time.... or how embarrassed it feels to have to roll change to put gas in my vehicle.... it is extremely depressing to the point of withdrawal. I can see why the suicide rate has spiked so high. It is as if there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

The bright side of this all is.... THERE IS A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL! We just haven't gotten close enough to see it!! Things will get very dark for awhile but eventually we WILL be guided back in to the light. The Great Depression started in October of 1929 with the crash of the stock markets. Soon to follow was the economic downfall which started in the USA then soon rippled throughout the world. The great depression lasted from 1929 through the last 1930's and even in to 1940 in some parts of the world. Gas and food were rationed. Industries came to a screaching halt. It was a devastating time.

Are we headed for this again?! Are we prepared if it does? Can Americans even survive such a crisis after having relied on such high tech modern luxuries as cell phones, high speed internet, blue tooth technology, Satellite systems, hybrid cars and so many others? That would be like asking a NY City resident to survive on the land in the middle of nowhere without access to civilization. Hmmmm. Food for thought.

I finished my Psychology course finally!

Ok... this psychology course was very long and difficult. I don't know how I managed it but I got 100% on all my assignments and quizes except one 90%. I am just glad it is over with.

I think I'll skip a semester. I don't want to have my nose stuck in books all summer.

My son is finally home from Colorado after living out there for the past 6 years. He is 30 years old now. That makes me feel old! Gee wiz! It takes a lot of weight off my shoulders, not having to worry about him being out there with no family there.

It's January 2009 and we are ready to embark on yet another year! I just finished my first semester with a 4.0 GPA. Yippee!! I'm slowly taking classes to work towards my associate degree in nursing. I need 67 credits to sit for the State boards to get my RN license even though I am currently an LPN. Sad to say... I only have 12 credits so far. :o(

January 20th I start my next semester but I am only taking Psychology this time around as I simply do not have the money to pay for the classes. (This is all coming out of my own pocket which means... It will be a slow journey).

Loom Knit Ribbed Autumn Harvest Pumpkin

This pattern has many options for the creative loomer. It can be made with a Styrofoam ball inside as this pattern is done, or you could stuff it with polyfil used for pillow projects. You can take a pair of pantyhose, tie off the legs filling the upper portion with pumpkin spice potpourri to add a festive aroma to the air.

Pumpkin:

Using the Green KK Loom (36 pegs 13/16” gauge)
Row 1) With pumpkin orange bulky yarn (2 strands as one), “e-wrap” all 36 pegs. (do not knit off)
Row 2) e-wrap another time around all 36 pegs. (do not knit off)
Row 3) e-wrap peg 1 – wrap working yarn (wy) to outside peg 2 & purl it pulling wy up under peg 2 loops, removing from peg, applying new loop to peg 2. e-wrap peg 3 - working yarn (wy) to outside peg 4 & purl it. Continue this process completely around the loom. **
It will appear as odd # pegs will have 3 loops, even pegs will have 2 until purled, then one.

Row 4) Knit off odd pegs 1-3-5-7-9, etc all around loom, knitting off 2 loops over 1 loop.

** Repeat series- Rows 1-4 as above until you reach 32 rows. Leave a 10” long tail when finishing row 32.
Binding off is simply done by threading a yarn needle with both strands of tail yarn. Weaving needle through each loop, remove the loops as you go.
Smush the loops together on the tail yarn as you go. When all loops are off the loom, tighten to close the circle. Tie a knot or two then weave the
needle through the threaded loops to hide the remaining tail yarn. Trim any excess.

Loom Knitter's Classroom project: "Simple Sweater" using a KISS adjustable gauge Loom.

This was not a simple sweater at all for me as I had never used this type of loom before so that in itself was a challenge. Graciela Worth designed this pattern which was a good challenging one for the class. Thankkfully she is a very patient teacher, as we needed her help quite alot.

I had the most difficulty increasing stitches as it kept leaving a hole. Oh... I also hated seaming the pieces together. I don't think I'll be a sweater maker. Nah! Not me!

Oh yes... you're wondering why it is called a KISS loom. K.I.S.S. stands for Keep It Simple Stupid (as thee ol' saying goes). (Not to insinuate loomers are stupid but from what I understand... this whole adjustable gauge hit Cliff like a brick as if a lightbulb in his head turned on and he saw it all too clearly... an adjustable gauge loom!! He said it was just too simple of an idea and couldn't believe nobody had thought of that before.

Mini-Family reunion breakfast!

Well, as we all know, I love the internet as it tends to unite people from afar. Relationships are formed with people you'd never ever meet in person. It allows us to learn from others and all about our new friends cultures and lives. Well one of my cousins whom I have not seen since early childhood found my name via the internet accidentally and her curiosity led her to send an
email to see if it was in fact me. Ever since, the internet has kept us in touch across the states.

Well this morning what was originally going to be a breakfast between the two of us so we could re-meet one another while she was in NY visiting my aunt (her mom)... one of her sisters is also here from Florida visiting... so she came to! My brother & his girlfriend came as well as Dad & his wife!
We had quite the family gathering at breakfast. It was so nice reuniting with blood relatives. It seems that the older we get the more important "family" becomes.

In our Loom Knitter's Classroom, we are being taught how to do various patterns and stitches via afghan squares. Robin McCoy & Jenny Stark are having us learn a different design each month so come December, we'll have at least 12 squares that are 12" x 12" to seam together to make a wonderful afghan for someones Christmas gift. We are all loving the class as the squares are small projects that we can not only finish but make several of to either create a larger afghan or make several of them. We are on block #3 and once I finish it I will post all of mine here.

Chocolate Ice Cream Sundae Hat

Yummy Yummy!! Here is the finished projects I made this weekend as a gift for a 4 month old baby who's mom works with me. I hope he likes them!!

The hat pattern was taught by Robin McCoy in the Loom Knitter's Classroom (Strawberry Sundae Delight Hat). Being that I was making it for a beautiful little boy, I decided to make it chocolate ice cream and added a touch of whip cream topping under the cherry on top!!

Then as my last post showed... I made a coordinating baby rattle out of Jenny Starks Cream Cone pattern which was also taught in our Loom Knitter's Classroom.

Ice Cream Anyone?!

I altered Jenny Stark's Cream Cone Pattern to make a baby rattle out of the ice cream cone to match the Ice Cream Sundae hat I made using Robin McCoy's Strawberry Sundae Delight Hat pattern.

What I did was loom knit the whip cream ruffles, then the actual ice cream. From there I took an Easter Egg (plastic), and enclosed a few jingle bells. The egg got pushed into the ice cream piece then kind of held in place by intertwining the long tails from the whip cream.

I proceeded on to make the cone to attach to the ice cream after stuffing it with alpaca fleece rovings as I had no fiber fill. Waaah-lah!! An ice cream rattle.

Hopefully I will find time to make a few more. I need to go buy some buttons though. I stole this white button from a garment hanging in the closet.

I've been quite delinquent in posting here as my life has become a bit more chaotic (in a good way)!!
Summer of 2007 has brought forth some very good changes in my life. Some sad changes as well.
A brief summary of some of the changes:
April 2007: Went to Orlando Florida for an excellent 4 days of nursing seminars with a co-worker Barb Miller. Had my wallet stolen with approx $120 cash in it & several bank cards. Not my drivers license nor plane tickets though!! Good thing!!
By the way, I was pick pocketed at an Orlando, Disney Resort. I Didn't find it any too magical.

June 1st. 2007 I had emergent surgery. Had my intestines & lower stomach resected due to strangulating scar tissue (adhesions) that caused me to have somewhat of a gastric bypass type surgery. They fixed it however now I am very restricted as to what I can eat & how much, therefore I have down-sized approximately 44 lbs. Sad thing is... I am still fat ;-o

July 5th, 2007 I traveled to Bolivia with Project Helping Hands to provide free medical care to the poverish, under developed areas on the outskirts of Cochabamba. My two week stay there was too short in my opinion. There is so much those people need.

Late July I started a new job working in a doctors office. Dr.Halliday, Ears, nose, throat (Otolaryngologist) & Facial Plastic surgery. I had to juggle my hospital nursing job 7pm - 7am and this new job for a few weeks as I gave my 3 week notice. That was rough!

August 12th, 2007 was my final day working at the hospital which was somewhat of a sad sacrifice as I do like the work & many of the people there. Just not too pleased with the administration & lack of planning on our managerial staff. I was often mandated working from 7pm until noon the next day. No sleep. Usually no breaks or lunch. That really stunk! It was also so very unsafe.

Here it is now September 2007 and Autumn is in the air. Kids return to school this week. The nights are very cool, days are no longer humid and reach mid 70's. Burrr!

Trials & Tribulations !!

August 2006 I purchased a fairly new Chevy Blazer (2003) with only 16,000 miles on it. Lately I have been thinking the transmission isn't right so I dropped it off at a garage to be checked out. Today, just 3 days prior to leaving for Bolivia... the mechanic calls me to tell me that I have a few things wrong with the vehicle. Hmmm.
My lower ball joints are loose, the front right wheel bearing is grinding, and it has a bad U-joint. None of which I have a clue about.
Thankfully I have 100% bumper to bumper GMAC warranty with no deductible. He is going to call GMAC to see if all or any of it is covered.
I have my fingers crossed!
I know this is just a test to see how well I handle this little hurdle to add stress to my already stressed being.

First of all... Happy 4th of July! I hope you are all celebrating the United States of America becoming independent!!

The Second Continental Congress formed a committee to write the Declaration, but the Committee thought it would be better for only one man to write the document. It took Thomas Jefferson seventeen days to write the Declaration of Independence. On July 2, 1776 the Congress voted to declare independence from England. After two days of debate and some changes to the document, on July 4th, the Congress voted to accept the Declaration of Independence. This is why we celebrate July 4th as Independence Day.

Straw Loom for weaving.... new projects!

Thanks to Graciela Worth for teaching our loom class a little different type of project!!

Using the Knifty Knitter Straw loom, she taught our Loom Knitter's Classroom something new.

The straw loom projects are fairly fast to do. The weaving goes by so fast.

Graciela showed us how to make beaded belts with the loom which naturally stimulated a little creativity in me :o) I used minimal bead & tiny ones at that as I am just not a bead person.

I am currently making a straw woven rug. Details to follow once I have completed it.

Sad to say... I have nothing new to show you as I have not had time to create anything new. June 1st I had an intestinal resection which set me back quite a bit. Am starting to go stir crazy now since I am out of work for 6 weeks or so. Still having dizzy spells & shortness of breath at times. I have intermittently been updating our Loom Knitting Classroom blog & such but that's about it.
Our class scheduler Denise Petersen has some fun classes lined up so I am going to start participating a little more so my hands stay busy & out of trouble.
Hopefully my next post will be of something new I have made!! (Hopefully)

Here it is! The felted Carmelita Bag.

Isela Phelps saw the felted booga bag

which was needle knit & she converted it

into a loom knitting pattern and taught it to us students at "Loom Knitter's Classroom.

It took me quite awhile to make as I used a small gauge adjustable loom with 90 pegs!

Between traveling to Orlando Florida for a nurses convention, to working full time, being a housewife full time, raising donations for the medical mission to Bolivia in July through "Project Helping Hands" .... oh.... and trying to re-learn some Spanish so I will be able to converse somewhat with the Bolivian natives we'll be treating. I took 2 yrs of Spanish in high school however that was.... oh my god.... 30 yrs ago! I sure don't feel that old.

And I remember very little Spanish I did learn back then. I just had no need to use it until now. Oh well!

Ok... It has been so long since I last posted... I forgot my user ID & password!! That's very neglectful of me. I have been very busy with our Loom Knitting Classroom & Classroom Blog.
I haven't even got to loom knit anything since early December.

I will be traveling with "Projects Helping Hands" to Bolivia on a medical mission to provide medical care to the under-deveolped third-world areas of Bolivia. Our trip will be only for 2 weeks: July 6th - July 19th, 2007. It is one of 6 trips this year being made by Project Helping Hands... to areas/countries of extreme need for medical care & surgical services for those with no means to get these services otherwise. Project Helping Hands is a non-profit org that does not descriminate against who "deserves" the care most. We treat the ill world wide including the USA.
We are anticipating a 25 person team for our mission in Bolivia- made up of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants, registered nurses, LPN's paramedics, respiratory therapists and other allied health professionals.

July 6 - July 19
Joan Eberhardt will be leading a medical team to the Central/Eastern portion of Bolivia.
Team members will be housed in very basic accomodations which may or may not have running water, electricity or beds.

Knitting Looms & Vendors:

People don't believe it but anyone with 2 hands can knit without needles. That's right!! Using a knitting loom, also known as round looms, knitting boards and knitting rakes, oh... and the knitting spools!

All are just a little different in nature. A round loom, a rake and a board all can be used to knit a flat piece with a right side & a wrong side of garment. A round loom and some rectangular looms can be used to knit in the round for items such as ski hats and socks. A board is used to make double knit garments which have 2 "right" sides.

Most knitter's find that loom knitting is so much better on their carpal tunnel or arthritic hands than needle knitting. Loom Knitting began a thousand yrs ago but has suddenly came back in full demand which prompted me to compile this extensive list of KNITTING LOOM VENDORS for you to utilize.

· Please note that most of the new looms are home-made and hand made by creative entrepreneurs and are quite good at it while others have not totally fine tuned their process. * Knifty Knitter looms are the only mass manufactured looms that I am aware of however that does not mean they don’t exist.

· This list is compiled as a resource, not as promoting their business nor vouching for their quality, prices, or customer service as I have just not used them all. I can perhaps help you save a little time and money.

** Do not purchase a bunch of looms from one vendor as you may not like how they feel in your hand. Some are wooden, some plastic, some rubber. There are differing pegs also: nylon (my favorite), plastic, wooden, cotter pin, and everyday nails! Yep…nails!

What I and most people find most helpful over the type of pegs is whether or not they are grooved pegs. I will not ever purchase a loom that doesn’t have grooves for your looming tool. (Cotter pins are naturally grooved). Once I did and regretted it. Being most are hand made to order, refunds are not accepted. So make sure you ask ahead of time: Do your pegs have grooves?!

Purchase looms from various vendors to find your favorite. I must have 20+ looms, all from various vendors and like most of them but a few are useless.

Anyways…on to the vendor list! It is posted in the right side bar down towards the bottom. It's quite extensive. I hope you find this information useful.

Picture #2.... And the winner is... Kubota L3130. Of course he can't have a plain ol tractor... He oredered the custom heated cab to be put on... and a bunch of implements to use with it such as the Snowblower, bucket loader, back hoe, forks & finish mower!!

Surino Mitten #1

Improving on my mitten makin'... I used same pattern I used for first mittens however this time I am using Suri Alpaca blended with Fine Merino ...I call it "Surino" :o)
It seems to knit up smaller & tighter than the brushed alpaca I used for first set. I was going to felt this next pair however I don't know that I dare as they fit perfectly... well at least this first mitten done in Surino. I did a little better attaching the thumb this time as I altered my pattern a bit. Actually, I did a different stitch for the cuff this time which made it look like it is folded over however it isn't. At this rate...I may be able to make mittens for everyone!!

Woohoo! I finished my mittens using my "In The Attic" Mitten loom set. They are fairly fast to knit however I am not tickled about the thumbs being attached the way they are. It's difficult aligning them up so loose strands or holes don't show through. I love the feel of my mittens though!! I made them of 100% Brushed alpaca and man ohh howdy are they ever soft! If you notice, I made them extra high on the wrist area as it drives me nuts when snow gets up under short mittens or gloves. These are perfect!! I love them.

Here is a puppy I made today. I am not completely satisfied with the end results however I posted photos before I take him a step further by trying to FELT him. Which means I may ruin him :o( as the only time I am able to felt anything is when I don't mean to...such as washing a $200 fine alpaca sweater! Eeek!

I'd like to bring up one thing about the loom poll results:
* Loomers obviously are not going to vote for a loom they have not tried. So out of all fairness, I'd like to mention one thing.... (or 2) ... that quite a few of the listed looms have never been heard of before by most loomers. We tend to purchase the most advertised looms & it makes them seem most popular. From a marketing stand-point, the more your product is mentioned on the web, the quality of your web site, the amount of vendors who sell your product, and of course the quality & ease of use of your product..... all make a difference. ** I could have the best hand-made, hand carved, fancy loom that is so wonderful to use and at a low price ... but not get the word out.... my website difficult to surf and not listed with many or any search engines.... VERY few will ever find me & my looms. So if only a few votes are entered for my loom... that does not mean they are not as I described... high quality & easy to use at affordable low prices... it just means that I am a poor marketer & have not invested enough for quality website design & hosting.
See what I mean? So keep this in mind when you see looms with a lower rating. Chances are they have not been used or even discovered by most loomers!

Booties & Bonnets!

Last night I was playing with my looms and made a few items. The cream colored booties are for my feet. I may still add some embellishments or something. As you can see, you can wear them high or roll down sides for a lower style. The tiny little hats are ones I made for fetal demise babies that never got a chance, either died in utero or premature birth- way too early. For the babes that are fully developed but are VERY tiny... the parents are allowed to hold their deceased babe in an effort to start their grieving process and pay their respects. The staff puts little hats on the babes, which the parents get to keep as a keepsake. Therefore, I made a few. The one on left is a pink/white varigated color. The one on right is a pale lavender. Fortunately we have very few fetal demises here in our hospital.

I did it!! I really did it!
Denise Layman asked Crystal Kini & myself to test a new pattern she wrote. Mind you I have never knit anything larger or more complicated than a scarf. This was a exciting challenge for me being a loomer since only February 2006! With Denise's patience & guidance... I made it through and with great pride I might add! :o) I learned quite a bit from this loom knitting experience: as the old saying goes...IF there is a will...there's a way! Persistence and determination saw me through! Not to mention the guidance from both Denise & Crystal. * This JIREE Cardigan pattern is an excellent project for loomers from almost all levels of looming experience. If I can do it... most anyone can! And I am sure Denise will always be there to answer your questions if you get hung up!

Progress on my Cardigan Project

Last night I got over my "2nd sleeve syndrome" in an effort to get this project done. This is what I have so far - besides the 2nd sleeve which is on my loom. I think after this, I'll stick to small projects as this large one seems to be a challenge to stay focused & determined. In other words.... I have attention deficit disorder.... as well as too many pans in the fire so to speak. Once I set it down to go to work, or do our farm accounting... or writing contracts... or any of the other responsibilities on my list...I find it difficult to pick up my loom. Yet once I have my loom in hand & aggressively knitting away.... I find it extremely difficult to set it down, finding myself knitting in to the early morning hours.
As I type this, I am looking at my first sleeve and am hoping it is long enough. It kind of looks too short but I followed the pattern so we'll see.
I am quite anxious to get this project done as I am missing out on the last 2 class projects over at our LOOM KNITTING CLASSROOM. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/loomclass

Well it has been several days since I rejoined the baby barn swallow with it's 3 siblings in their mud nest. All seem to be doing great & both parents continue to frequent the nest with their meals. See what a little TLC can do?! :o)

After some persistent research today, I found that not only are the barn swallows a federally protected bird & it is illegal to have them or even move their nests without a permit.... I also read that nestlings (newborns) that have fallen from nest can be rejoined without their parents neglecting them. According to research, turkey buzzards are the only bird that can smell. I can't say that I believe that as I recall Robin's rejecting their eggs if touched by a human. At least that is what my parents always told us. The baby bird was all warmed up, fed several drops of our Hippy Chicks special Avian parenteral food via eye dropper... and eventually started making little chirps so I felt as though he was going to make it if put back in his nest with his 3 siblings.
So we'll monitor the situation.

This morning, quite early I might add... around 5:30am I was making my farm rounds when I found the baby barn swallow that had tumbled from it's nest yesterday. Mark saw it yesterday but opted not to help it as putting it back in the nest would prevent parents from tending the other babes due to human scent. Mark didn't know if a parent might try picking up the baby & carrying it back up to it's nest that was carefully constructed of mud, sticks, grass & feathers above our barn door.

Needless to say, the baby swallow laid gasping with wings stretched out, on the wet ground.... very cold. He looks very weak. His beak keeps opening silently as if gasping for air. Head too heavy to lift. Unable to watch him suffer, I brought him in to warm him up... and give him the best TLC I possibly can in an effort to give this helpless bird a chance at life. Mark of course feels as if it is a parent reject that got pushed from the nest perhaps due to illness or weakness. That it is going to die no matter how well I nurse it. (And I am usually the realist).

Barn swallows are not the most harmonious birds when it comes to song http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/audio/Barn_Swallow.html and some think of them as a menace because of their mud nests...but in all actuality... they are very useful for the fact they feed solely on flying insects which keeps the mosquito population down.... which means keeping the West Nile Virus at a minimum.

Now.... I have to figure out how to catch him some flying insects! Do they even eat insects at this newborn age? I am guessing he is 2-4 days old.

Here is an interesting fact. As a nurse I have this odd habit of checking vital signs. This little teeny tiny bird has a heart beat of 138 beats per minute. I am still trying to figure out how to check his blood pressure though. :o)

My World as we know it!

The Jiree Cardigan project is well under way. The back is done & one front panel is nearly finished. Just about 6 more rows. In between my loom knitting, I have been suffering with a very sore throat & inflammed lymph nodes....as well as feeling run down...ill like.

Yesterday I noticed one of of our White Crested Black Polish Bantams limping. After examining her, I found myself treating a very inflammed foot pad with a large sore smack dab in center of pad. All infected. So being a human nurse & animal lover, my natural instincts were to start treating her wound. I pulled the plug of dirt from the pad that filled the infected foot...soaked her foot in a small bowl of peroxide followed by a betadine dip. Dabbed her dry. Spread bacitracin ointment into the hole, and wrapped her foot up nice & neat with a mini sterile gauze, covering it with tape to keep it in place. I also gave her a shot of Penicillin.
Today she just about had her dressing off. I repeated the above treatment plan. The inflammation has gone down drastically since yesterday.

We love our Polish hens. They are so docile & easily handled. However they have cost me a small fortune. Back about 6 months ago we had one ( her name is Hippy Chick because of her hair do) ... anyways, Hippy started having frequent seizures lasting up to 1 hour. She has always had them but maybe once every 6 months or so. Her seizures started being every other day or so. To make a LONG story short, her vet visit, tests, medicines & special feed run me approximately $375 only to find out she has hypoglycemia (Diabetes). Her blood glucose level was extremely low. So now we have to feed her a special feed that is like a thick can of Ensure - used for parenteral stomach tube feedings. Thankfully she loves it...otherwise I don't know how we'd get it in her. Her seizures have subsided ever since we started feeding her the special Avian food. People thought I was plum loco spending that much on a chicken... but Hippy is like a puppy to us. She follows us everywhere, comes when called, she talks back to you when she hears her name. She is well worth the money.

I am just getting started on Denise's project which is going to be a vibrant blue- done in Bernat Soft Boucle.
Might I add...the pattern is done in a garter stitch & I do not like how this boucle yarn purl's. It is very difficult to purl with that type of yarn...at least for me it is. The yarn is softer than I initially thought. Feeling the skein it didn't feel so soft but knit up it is feeling alot softer. Anyways, wish me luck on this project as it is a big challenge for me. So far the pattern looks easy enough to understand.... then again I am only on row 20. :o)

My New Looms!

Yippee!! I am doing the happy dance!!

I got my new looms from Decor Accents!! I just love the wonderful craftmanship!! I ordered all small gauge looms this time in an effort to cut back on the quantity of yarn needed. The regular/large gauge Knifty Knitter's usually take 2 strands which means twice as much yarn. Yippee Skippy!! I sure can't wait to start using them!!

I am so very impatient with myself! I can't stand it sometimes. I'm like a kid trying to sleep on Christmas Eve...knowing Santa is coming... oooh ...the anticipation!

I'm committed to another large project right now. Denise Layman asked me to test a new pattern for her (to my surprise :o) and I accepted the challenge! Why??! Hmmm. I have never been brave enough to even consider such a project as I have such difficulty understanding patterns.... at least I was having difficulty... until my brain started absorbing the info taught by our volunteer teachers over at our Loom Knitter's Classroom (yahoo group)! We've only done a few projects however the info I have been taught is worth it's weight in gold... I mean it's weight in yarn. LOL!

Class Project ~ Fancy Purse

Well.... Here is my fancy purse. I had to complete it before all the directions were posted because I need my loom....

What I learned from this project:

* Eyelash type yarns end up with 90% of the eyelash wisps on the wrong side of project until you brush it to pull it back through.

* You really need a hard (firm) purse handle that is large enough to reach to both sides of purse.... and the solid handle to hold bag stretched out flat as my soft leather handle makes the purse drap in the middle at the top.

This was a nice fast project & the yarn is very soft. I used Caron Simply Soft Quick - Super bulky with a strand of Lion Brand Fancy Fur- Bulky > Knitting them together.

Central NY Rain keeps wet alpacas fully fleeced!

Did I mention that we are STILL waiting for the alpacas to dry out so we can shear them?! Here we are ...June 9th, 2006 with wet wooly wonders just waiting to be shorn of their luxurious alpaca fleece. At least the rain keeps them cool as they can not tolerate the extremely hot temps. Once the temps hit high 80's, or even into the 90's.... they do not do well. They truly love the water though! You so much as walk near the garden hose and they'll come running, teasing to be sprayed. Hopefully they'll dry out by my next nights off from work.

My Model Baby!

After the trials & errors of knitting garments by quessing sizes, I went and bought myself a baby! Finally I was able to find a true to life baby 20" long, 15.25" head circumference, life sized hands & feet also! It's so real like... sometimes I think his mouth moves! LOL!!
Now my newborn items will be accurate in size.
However they will be put on the back burner for now as I am about to embark on a challenging project. It's a secret for now. I'll update you later on that! :o)

I stopped at Walmart this morning for Milk & came home with a bunch of Goodies for a fancy clutch bag I will be creating in our Loom Knitter's Classroom this week.

I had to do some wild color coordinating. Walmart doesn't have many of any one color or brand which made it difficult.
We're learning how to create a Fancy Clutch Purse taught by Jenn Perry. I have no use for the clutch purse but do them anyways for practice.
I'll post my end product when I get done.

Toaster Cover

We're still waiting for our alpacas to dry out so we can shear them. Here it is June 5th aleady! At least the rain is keeping them cooled down.
In the mean time I decided to attempt making a toaster cover for our new toaster!
No pattern, just created as I loomed. I used "Bernat Handicrafter Cotton" Yarn- Rosewood color. I did the toaster cover in sections.

The top panel first.

Then 2 sides. Because my new toaster has fat rounded top edges unlike my skinny square top old one... I had to decrease stitches to get it to fit my toaster.

After top & side panels were made, I decided to add I-Cord trim to the seams. I then stitched all together at once: Top, I-Cord & side panel.
I am excited to say that it turned out not tooo bad!
** My only fear is that it will shrink when washed as it just fits now. I even made it 2" larger on loom that I needed.
*** My lessons learned:
1) With a little imagination & old fashioned determination.... you can make anything without a pattern!
2) Make items substantially larger that you'd like end product to be as once it is taken off loom, it is ALOT smaller... and may shrink even smaller when washed.

Waiting for our alpacas to dry ...

It's Saturday May 27th, 2006. We've been trying to shear our alpacas for several weeks now however mother nature seems to rain on shearing party every weekend. We can't shear them wet so... here we wait. Actually the sun came out this afternoon & is starting to dry them up however I have to go to work in just a short while.
Impatient with the weather... I found myself surfing loom knitting websites again. After several months of deciding no... I finally caved in and purchased some more looms!
I went to Decor Accents http://decoraccentsinc.com and purchased 3 looms: a 60" Infinity Rake- Small gauge, a Adult Hat loom Small gauge, and a Child Hat loom - Small gauge. With s&h it come to $124.13 !! Now I have to convince myself that I CAN use the afinity loom. I just love the waffle weave afghan by Cindy Abernethy and may just attempt it :o)

The hat looms won't be a problem. I use my knifty knitters regularly however I wanted a smaller gauge so I don't need to use double strands all the time.

I haven't had the time to do much looming lately which is why I haven't posted anything. Hopefully after shearing & alpaca sales, writing contracts & such... I will be able to return to the loom! Until next time... Adios!

Drawstring Pouch

Here's a little drawstring pouch I made with some of remaining peaches & cream cotton yarn. It matches my tote bag. I started out practicing a stitch pattern that I found attractive, a double moss stitch however mine looks nothing like the photo I was going by.
The pattern was simple enough.
Row 1 ---> K2P2K2P2 all pegs.
Row 2 ---> K2P2K2P2 all pegs.
Row 3 ---> P2K2P2K2 all pegs
Row 4 ---> P2K2P2K2 all pegs.
Row 5 ---> K2P2K2P2 all pegs, etc...
Anyways, it was fun going from practicing a stitch to end up creating a bag from imagination. The bottom is made separately then crochet to the round sides of bag. The handle as you can see is an I-Cord made with my "Wonder Knitter". After starting the I-Cord on the wonder knitter, I had remembered that I have a new Embelish Knitter that I haven't even opened. I would have like to try that.
Well.... I am really enjoying my looms. I have no idea what I'll do with all my little projects but they're fun to make anyways!

Garter Stitch Tote with handles

Tonight I finished adding final touches to my class project....Tote bag with handles. Feeling creative, I decided to add some unique-ness to my tote.
I made a flower with stem & leaves.
As you can see, I had no green yarn so I made do with what I have.

This bag was done with Peaches & Cream Cotton Yarn (string) - Knit on the yellow Knifty Knitter loom using the garter stitch (which is not my favorite).

The stitch pattern looks like a basic (generic) needle knit stitch however it takes more work to do, having to alternate rows between purl & knit stitches.

This bag would be handy & practical if a liner was added to it to prevent things from falling thru the stitch holes.... and to prevent contents within the bag from getting snagged in the stitches.

8th project ~ Furry Rainbow Bag

Here it is! My furry rainbow bag with drawstring closure & a side pocket that has an I-cord button closure. I used the large knifty knitter loom.
This is the first project I have made that isn't made from alpaca.
I just couldn't resist this attractive yarn as I wandered down the yarn isles of Walmart. The photos do it no justice. There's pinks, purples, blue's, magenta, yellow, greens, metallic.... and several colors in between.
It's lusciously soft.

Project #7 Baby Bonnet

Thanks to Judy Hudson, I was able to learn how to make a baby bonnet! I added the white flower myself as an accent to add pizazz! This particular bonnet was made from 2 fingering wgt stands of pink alpaca & one strand of sport wgt alpaca/fine merino.

Finished Project #6 Baby Blue Alpaca Scarf!

I finally finished my 6th project! The scarf took alot longer than the hats. I really am pleased with the mysterious pattern I used for this scarf. The single strand yarn (alpaca) fingering wgt that is... makes this a light, dressy scarf more for style than function. It has a natural curl to the edges that actually adds to it's delicate design.

I don't know that I will hurry off to start another scarf soon as it is time consuming for someone that works full time off the farm and has farm chores to do on the farm, a business to run and a webstore to maintain. Working on the scarf made me put off all other responsibilities as I was eager to complete the scarf. (aka... addicted to looming) :o)

6th Project In The Works!

FRONT BACK

Well... I have to tell you all, I purchased the Curley Q scarf pattern & put it to the test. Needless to say, as a newbie in the loom knitting world.... I failed to understand the pattern directions. I failed miserably! I need visuals. So basically I wasted $5 on a pattern I can't use. At least not right now. Later I'll hunt down someone who can "show me" what they mean.

In the mean time my hands felt creative. Playing around with my adult sock loom, I found a very pretty stitch that I'd love to know the name of. My scarf is being made using 26 of 28 pegs. The yarn is single strand light baby blue alpaca cloud fingering weight. The photos on my monitor appear much darker than the yarn really is.

The scarf has a nice pattern on both sides. I start with a double wrap on peg #1, dip under peg 2, up & wrap around peg 2 in an upside down "e" wrap, to peg 3 in a regular "e" wrap, to #4 upside down "e" wrap, so on & so forth.

It sounds complicated but it's not. I have no clue what the stitch or pattern is called so I call it.... "this way & that way" stitch. Simply because I switch back & forth every other peg with the "e" wrap. The results are very pretty.

* So please, if anyone recognizes this stitch or pattern, please leave a cooment so I as a newbie to the loom knitting world, can start learning some of this knitting lingo.

Avery's 1st Alpaca Hat! My 5th Project.

Well, I've been buying a variety of yarns in different textures as I catch sales... but as I sit idol.... my heart keeps traveling to my new (and only) grandchild in Silver Bay,MN. Her name is Avery...and I have not met her yet. Since I can not be there to meet her right now, I decided to loom her a pretty hat made of 100% Alpaca as temps are bitter cold on Lake Superior.
I can't have my new grandaughter catching cold now can I?!

Now that I have the hats down..... I need to start learning how to loom other garments or projects to expand my skills. So bring it on!

Project #4 Adult Ski Hat

Yippee! I created another master piece!

Ok... well maybe it isn't quite a master piece but I'd have to say that it turned out much nicer than I had anticipated. Not so much the quality of my looming on my yellow Knifty Knitter loom but the colors.

Although you can't see the true colors due to monitor variances... the brim or band is a very pale ice aqua color. It almost looks white on my computer. I found that it wasn't thick enough even using two strings so I decided I'd use a strand of the grey angora rabbit/alpaca yarn which would compliment one another (the colors that is)... as soon as I finished the band. Hoping it would start thickening up as I knit the remainder of the hat.
However as I knit (loomed) ... I really hated the contrasting colors. I started to pull it out then realized I didn't have any other thicker yarn to replace the color. So onward I loomed!
Are you ready for this?! ~*~ Of course you are! :o)
Upon completion... I actually do like the color combination. All turned out well!
So...to sum it up...
fiber contents: The aqua ice yarn is baby soft alpaca. The dk grey strand is 70% juvenile alpaca/30% angora rabbit.
Is the hat baby soft?! You betcha!!

A 3rd Project! Knit & felted Water Bottle Tote

Here's something a little different. I used my Knifty Knitter loom and my luxury yarn that I raised here on the farm. True Black huacaya alpaca 70% blended with 30% light grey english angora rabbit. This yarn is heavenly! It cost me a small fortune to get it processed because nobody likes to mill angora rabbit because of it leaves a cloud of fleece on the machinery & everything in the room. It's very messy due to it's fly-away consistency. The best I can describe angora is ... like cotton candy on the tongue. You just can't feel it. It's so light, so soft... it's as if you're not touching anything. Heavenly it is. Blended with alpaca only makes it that much more luxurious.

This water bottle tote came to mind as a useful item for when I take the alpacas for walks, or when working out back... or even cleaning pastures. Power walkers, bicyclers, beach combers... many people find this useful.
I used a Knifty Knitter loom, with my Angora/Alpaca blended yarn as described above.
The handle or strap... was attached as I removed the project from the loom (I forget what that's called) - but I wanted to add strength so I started making the strap using 3 pegs- as close to the bottom of the tote. (I tightened it up later). Once I completed making the strap, I attached it to each side of the "pocket" or tote... using a crochet hook. The strap goes all the way down to the base of the tote & is tied inside- both strap ends. Then the tails are weaved in to the existing stitches.
I added the beige accent as a contrast. Oh... I also made a knit ring that I knit around the strap where I hang my keys when I am out walking.
Once I got all done, I washed it in the washing machine, hot soapy water on a short cycle.
It didn't shrink and felted only partially but just enough to add strenth and hold the knitting together & prevent stretching. I may even wash it again.
It holds up to a quart bottle.

Yippee! I made a second project all on my own. Of course I had no pattern nor any clue as to what I was going to make until I was actually doing it. I had this sensuously soft alpaca that I just wanted to work with just to feel it I guess. Home grown right here in Central New York by prime juvenile huacaya alpacas... this yarn is dreamy soft.
(You see... I have a very busy life and too many pans in the fire so to speak... plus I have a bit of attention deficit disorder I think... so I try to keep my projects small).

Created with one of the Knifty Knitter looms. This pouch is small. Approx 4.5" x 6" tall.
Made of 100% Pure farm fresh juvenile huacaya alpaca. Please feel free to comment on any of the projects.

My first Knifty Knitter project: Ski Hat 100% Alpaca

I took some photo's today of my very first creations on the Knifty Knitter looms. Heck... they are my only projects by any means since I don't know how to knit or crochet with needles & just learned how to use the looms at a seminar taught by Chris Gilman at a workshop during Empire Alpaca Symposium February 5th, 2005 at the Turning Stone Casino's event Center. It was a 3 hr course that cost $40 which included the 4 pk looms & enough alpaca yarn for several projects.
I figured that I had better make something while the info is still in my head. I took 2 photos of each project made.
* Now I am looking for more easy projects to tackle using the Knifty Knitter looms. They MUST be detailed instructions with photos as I am very new at this :o) so please feel free to email me any potential projects!!
I'm ready for a new challenge.

This hat is made of 100% home grown Central New York Huacaya Alpaca, processed & spun by A+ Alpaca Fiber Mill in Jordan, NY. The hat is my very first project!! It fits a youth- large child or small teen.

My first lesson learned: Projects can knit up alot smaller than the loom! ;-o ooops!
